Canon has recently announced the EOS R50, an all-new compact, mirrorless camera that is designed to replace its 77D and M50 series models. The introduction of the shooter also officially marks the transition of the brand’s APS-C offerings to feature the more current RF mount lenses.

The new Canon EOS R50 shares the form factor as its direct predecessor, the M40 Mark II, but offers a sleeker design with its curvier edges. Similarly, it is also aimed to appeal to content creators thanks to its compact size and minimal camera operation, which are tailored for activities such as blogging and so on.

The camera’s major feature is the addition of the RF mount, which offers a shorter flange back distance between the sensor and lens, better continuous shooting speed and autofocus (AF) coverage, as well as promoting cross-compatibility. Meanwhile, found on its back is a 0.39-inch OLED electronic viewfinder with 2.36 million dots resolution, and a 2.9-inch TFT LCD vari-angle screen with 1.62 million dots resolution.

Under the hood, the EOS R50 comes with a 24.2 MP APS-C sensor, which is paired together with Canon’s newer DIGIC X imaging processor. Amusingly, the brand’s press release claims that the former is “three times larger than the 1-inch sensor on the latest smartphones.” Which isn’t wrong in any sense, but it is funny to see a camera maker is somewhat openly acknowledging mobile photography as the competition. But I digress.

On top of offering natural bokeh effects, as well as sharper and detailed images in both photos and videos, the new Canon camera is also touted to be the first entry-level EOS APS-C mirrorless that is capable of producing high-quality cropless 4K 30p videos oversampled from 6K worth of data. Also onboard is the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, which promises improved detection for numerous subjects including people, animals, and vehicles.

Besides that, other notable features include built-in digital image stabilisation methods that performs 5-axis camera shake correction, an Auto Levelling Mode that corrects horizontal tilt, camera-to-PC live streaming via USB-C, and the ability to wireless transfer images to your smartphone. Speaking of connectivity and such, the Canon EOS R50 also comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, and a single SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot.

The new Canon EOS R50 is slated to be available in certain markets in early spring of 2023, and will retail for US$ 680 (~RM 2,931) for body only. Even though the camera is already listed in Canon Malaysia’s website, its local pricing and expected availability has not been confirmed at this time.
