Celcom 5G Friendly User Trial Provides Free Unlimited Data, Alongside 5G Roaming

Celcom 5G

In late August, Celcom’s CEO Mohamad Idham Nawawi revealed the telco’s plan to launch a 5G consumer trial in September and has integrated 1,000 5G sites across the country into its network. Fast forward to two weeks later, Idham then revealed in the company’s 1H financial announcement that its 5G friendly user trial (FUT) has already begun.

However, the telco did not elaborate further on what exactly “friendly” means in the FUT moniker apart from the fact that the trial involved a handful of customers. It is only today that more details regarding Celcom 5G consumer trial have come under the limelight, thanks to the FAQ documentation that was published on Celcom’s website.

First reported by SoyaCincau, it is unclear when exactly the FAQ first popped up on Celcom’s website. There was no mention of how exactly the telco choose which customers can participate in the 5G FUT although those that got picked up by Celcom for the trial will be sent an SMS.

Once they received it, they then should be able to connect to 5G immediate whenever they are within the coverage areas. Celcom has generally listed down several 5G areas inside the FAQ document which include:

  • Rawang
  • Selayang
  • Kepong
  • Sentul
  • Setapak
  • Mont Kiara
  • Chow Kit
  • KLCC
  • Bangsar
  • Cheras
  • Kuchai Lama
  • Bukit Jalil
  • Putrajaya
  • Johor Bahru
  • Penang

Since the government has adopted the Single Wholesale Network modal for the national 5G network, you have to refer to the 5G coverage map on Digital Nasional Berhad’s website for specific locations. This also applies to the list of supported 5G devices while Celcom did not forget to point out that iPhones are still not able to connect to DNB’s 5G network.

Meanwhile, those who were chosen to participate in Celcom 5G FUT will not have to worry about data quota as any data usage through the 5G network will not be counted against the quota that has been allocated to their respective postpaid plans. In addition to that, they will also be able to utilize 5G Roaming in other countries including Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, and many more with selected telco partners.

However, Celcom did not specifically mention whether there is a cost or data quota to the 5G Roaming feature but to be on the safe side, we do recommend you to check out the details regarding roaming passes on Celcom’s website.

Inside the FAQ, Celcom has also urged 5G FUT customers to share their feedback through this feedback form by 3 October. Hence, we predict that Celcom may launch its 5G offerings not long after that, probably within October or November but in case you want the telco to buzz you once they are ready to launch its 5G service, you can register your interest right here.
