Fujifilm has recently unveiled its all-new X-S20 mirrorless camera, which is available now for pre-order in Malaysia. Like its predecessor that was released in 2020, it arrives with a compact form factor, an APS-C sensor, and interchangeable lens support for X-mount lenses. Of course, the newer model does with significant upgrades onboard; most notably the X-Processor 5 image processor which also powers other cameras from the brand, such as the X-H2 and the X-T5.

Like the three-year-old X-S10, the newer camera has mostly the same overall design and button layouts; featuring a magnesium-alloy front and top-plate, as well as a large and easy-to-hold grip. Fujifilm notes that it has increased the size of some dials and buttons, added a second audio jack, and tweaked the grip to be more comfortable. Despite the slight changes, the company says the X-S20 also weighs more or less like its predecessor at approximately 491g, and is touted to be operable in temperatures ranging from zero to over 40-degrees Celsius.

Apart from that, available on the shooter is a 3-inch vari-angle touch display with 1.84M dots resolution, and a 0.39-inch OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF) which offers 2.36M dots resolution. The X-S20 supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 wireless connectivity, while I/O-wise it features a USB-C port for data and charging, a micro HDMI, two 3.5mm jacks for external microphones or headphones, and a single UHS-II SD card slot.

Powering the camera is an included 8.7Wh NP-W126 removable battery, which offers approximately 85 minutes of 6.2K video recording or around 750 shots of still imagery on a single charge. The company notes that the X-S20 also supports the FAN-001 cooling fan accessory which enables for extended continuous shooting. This easily attaches to the compartment hidden behind the camera’s vari-angle display.

Under the hood, accompanying the aforementioned image processor is Fujifilm’s X-Trans 26.1MP stacked CMOS APS-C sensor, which is the same one used on the 2020 model. The latter offers a native ISO range of 160 to 12800 (expandable up to 80 to 51200), and working in tandem with the faster X-Processor 5 enables the camera to continuously shoot 1,000 JPEG or compressed RAW images via mechanical shutter or 256 JPEG or 79 compressed RAWs via electronic shutter. There’s also a built-in five-axis in-body stabilisation (IBIS) system, which offers up to seven stops of shake correction.

The Fujifilm X-S20 is also touted to come with improved autofocus (AF) and tracking capabilities with deep AI learning integration. These allow for advanced detection capabilities for human faces and eyes, as well as subjects such as birds, vehicles and many more. In addition, the updated algorithm also lets the camera automatically focus on both moving and stationary subjects more accurately in Zone AF and even low-contrast situations.

A much welcomed improvement is the device’s capability of recording videos at up to 6.2K 30p in 4:2:2 10-bit colour, which is a big leap compared to its predecessor’s limit of 4K 30fps. The Fujifilm X-S20 also offers F-Log2 which promises over 13 stops of dynamic range, as well as the ability to record 12-bit Apple ProRes and Blackmagic RAW at 6.2K 30p or 5.2K 30p via HDMI. Other features include a new Vlog Mode which places priority to the presenter, a Product Priority Mode that emphasises more on the item presented, and a Live Stream Mode. As usual, you can also expect a slew of built-in colour profiles and image enhancements available at your disposal.

Pre-order for the Fujifilm X-S20 is open now until 25 June 2023 via the brand’s authorised dealers nationwide. It is priced at RM6,888 for body only, RM7,388 with the 15-45mm kit lens, or RM8,888 when bundled together with the 18-55mm kit. The new APS-C mirrorless camera is expected to arrive in Malaysia by late June or early July this year. Fujifilm adds that those who pre-order through participating vendors are also eligible to receive free gifts including an extended 1+1 year warranty, two 128GB SD Extreme Pro UHS-I memory cards, an extra NP-W235 battery, a Sandisk 1TB portable SSD, a Nanlite Litolite-5C, a RM500 XF Lens voucher, and a USB thumbdrive.
