Google Officially Unveils Pixel Watch During Its I/O Conference

Google Pixel Watch Launch

It looks like the considerably major leak regarding Google’s first ever smartwatch turned out to be accurate. Unveiled earlier today during its Google I/O conference is the Pixel Watch, which looks exactly like the unit that was “accidentally” left at an undisclosed restaurant in the US last month.

As previously revealed, the newly introduced Google Pixel Watch features a circular, dome-shaped display, a “tactile” crown, side button, and a body made from recycled stainless steel. Attached magnetically and locked via twist mechanism to it are proprietary silicon bands. Unfortunately, Google didn’t reveal much regarding certain specifications of its first-ever smartwatch, so details such as display size, chipset, possible water/dust resistance rating, battery life, and the different types of onboard sensors.

And as speculated prior to this, the watch is confirmed torun on the new Wear OS platform that is co-developed by Google and Samsung. While the company is still tight-lipped about most of the Pixel Watch’s key features, it did mention that the wearable will come with native Google apps such as Maps, Assistant, Wallet and Home. There’s the handy Emergency SOS feature as well, which allows you to contact a friend, family member or emergency services in moments of need.

Most interestingly, it is revealed that the smartwatch will also come with Fitbit integration to manage its health and fitness based functions, including tracking for heart rate, sleep and so on. On that note, Google adds that the Pixel Watch is able to sync the user’s data with a Fitbit account, enabling them to keep track of it via the Fitbit app. Consecutively, the company also assured that all data will stay private, as per the regulations set when it acquired the fitness wearable brand back in January of last year.

Availability-wise, Google says the Pixel Watch will debut alongside the newly unveiled Pixel 7 smartphone in fall 2022, but its expected pricing has yet to be revealed. Seeing that any of the tech giant’s smartphone line had not officially launched in Malaysia, it is possible that its first-party smartwatch may never see a local release either.
