Goya gaya – advertising overdrive at White House!

If
you have bean wondering what Trump has bean up to, look no further. It’s all
about canned beans.

Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the US, known for its canned beans is now embroiled in controversy after many consumers decided to boycott their products.

The
hashtags #BoycottGoya and #Goyaway have been trending meteorically since.

The
boycott came after Goya’s boss Robert Unanue praised President Donald Trump at
an event at the White House.

He
said, “Mr. President, what can I tell you? We are so blessed to have you as our
leader, as we continue to build this country and make it the most prosperous
nation in the world.”

Since
then, Trump has been full of beans to say the least. In a brazen show of
reciprocity he posed with an array of Goya products  right from his Resolute desk in the Oval
Office. This has been seen as an ethics violation, under which using a public
office to endorse products is prohibited.

He
tweeted, “GoyaFoods is doing GREAT. The Radical Left smear machine backfired,
people are buying like crazy!”

Keeping it in the family, Ivaka Trump had earlier tweeted a photo of a can of Goya black beans alongside a somewhat eerie, sponcon-like caption: “If it’s Goya, it has to be good.”

Some
social media users mocked her by saying that “Black Beans Matter” more than
Black lives.

The stunts have drawn criticism for possibly violating government ethics standards. Trump politics felt like a betrayal specific to the Hispanic immigrant community, given the president’s history of explicitly racist remarks and anti-immigrant deportation policies.

From
calling Mexican immigrants drug smugglers and “rapists” on the campaign trail
to eventually enacting immigration policies that separate children from their
families at the border and detain them in cages.

Meantime this is branding week at the White House!
