Following its recent appearance at 1 Utama, Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has officially launched the new IONIQ 5 EV in Malaysia. It is the second all-electric model in the company’s line-up after the Kona Electric which was announced for our market last November.
Originally made its global premiere in February last year, the IONIQ 5 is the first model to come from the refreshed IONIQ brand which is now fully focused on EV. Subsequently, IONIQ 5 is also the first vehicle to be built on Hyundai’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).
In Malaysia, the IONIQ 5 can be obtained in three configurations including the Lite and Plus which carries the same 58.2kWh battery as well as the same maximum range of 384km under the WLTP cycle. Both variants also feature a 125kW motor in its rear-wheel-drive setup that delivers maximum power of 125kW/170PS alongside a maximum torque of 350Nm.
On another hand, there is also the Max option which is equipped with a 72.6kWh battery that allows it to go as far as 430km alongside bigger 20-inch wheels. The particular option is also equipped with an all-wheel-drive 225kW/305PS setup that also provides a maximum torque 605Nm.
Aside from the bigger wheels, the Max variant in Malaysia also features a solar roof that is not only able to prevent battery discharge but can help extend the range of the car by more than 1,500km per year. That’s roughly around 4km per day which may not sound much, but still better than nothing.
Made possible by IONIQ 5’s Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature, the Max variant has also been equipped 230V electrical socket located underneath the rear seats. Hyundai has also provided both IONIQ 5 Max and Plus variants with a bidirectional exterior charging port (shown below) that can deliver up to 3.6 kW of power to external devices.
When it comes to charging time, all three variants take 47 minutes or 18 minutes to go from 10% to 80% when charged using a 50kW or 350kW DC fast charger, respectively. For the standard AC 11kW charger, it takes around 5 hours to fill up IONIQ 5 Lite and Plus battery from 0% to 100% while the Max variant takes slightly longer at 6.1 hours.
As for the pricing, the IONIQ 5 Lite can be obtained for RM199,888 OTR without insurance while the Plus option costs RM229,888. For those who prefer the top-of-the-range (heh) Max variant instead, the price tag is RM259,888.
All IONIQ 5 come with a standard 2-year warranty or 50,000km although their batteries are covered with their own 8-year/160,000km warranty. For an additional RM10,000, customers can upgrade to the 5-year/100,000km warranty coverage instead which is inclusive of a 3-year/50,000km service maintenance package although there will be no changes to the battery warranty.
If you want to install an AC charging station in your home to cater for your spanking new IONIQ 5, HSDM is also able to help you with that. For RM6,000, you can have a 7kW charger installed in your home or have the 22kW charger instead for RM7,000.
