Lenovo has unveiled the Ultimate Edition of the Legion Y700, its first ever gaming tablet. What sets this new variant apart from the original is the inclusion of electrochromic glass technology on its rear panel.

For those unfamiliar, the tech features specialised glass that is able to shift colour or even turn opaque when it is electronically activated. You may have seen this in action before on other smart devices, with notable ones including the China-exclusive Reno5 Pro Plus Limited Edition and Oneplus’ Concept One smartphone. In the Legion Y700 Ultimate Edition’s case, its rear panel will transition from plain metallic to patterned whenever the tablet is in use. Lenovo is offering the device in two colour options: Icy White and Glare Blue.

Gimmick aside, the specifications for the newer Ultimate Edition remain unchanged from the original release. To recap, the Legion Y700 features a 8.8-inch flat LCD display with 2560 x 16000 pixel resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, 240 Hz touch sampling rate, and comes with HDR10 support. Also onboard are JBL-tuned stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Android 12 via Lenovo’s ZUI 13 interface, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 support, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Under its hood is the same Snapdragon 870 chipset but unlike the original, the Ultimate Edition is only offered in a single memory configuration of 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. Powering the device is a 6,550 mAh battery with 45W fast charging support via USB-C. Imaging-wise, on the back of the Legion Y700 is a lone 13MP primary camera, while situated in its display’s upper bezel is an 8MP selfie camera.

As expected, the new variant sports a heavier price tag, thanks to the inclusion of the new electrochromic glass panel. To be specific, the retail price for the Legion Y700 Ultimate Edition is CNY 3,699 (~RM 2,440), whereas the original maxes out at CNY 2,499 (~RM 1,661) for the top-end memory configuration. But as before, Lenovo has not revealed any plans to release the tablet or its siblings in other regions outside of China at this time.
