The second-generation Apple Silicon release is now upon us with the unveiling of the Apple M2 processor that took place earlier today. The company didn’t waste any time putting the new chip into action though, as it has also launched two new M2-based MacBook models which include the MacBook Pro 13.

Unlike the MacBook Air M2 which offers features such as a larger (but notched) display and fast charging capability, there are almost no differences between the M2-based MacBook Pro 13 and its M1 predecessor.

The 2022 MacBook Pro 13 with M2 still features the same 13.3-inch IPS-based Retina display with 2560 x 1600 resolution, 500nits brightness, P3 colour gamut coverage, and support for True Tone technology. It also still carries a Touch Bar on top of its Magic Keyboard area, a 720p FaceTime HD camera, two USB-C Thunderbolt ports, and a 58.2Whr battery that provides it with the same battery life of up to 17 hours for wireless web browsing or 20 hours when used to watch Apple TV content.

Hence, the largest change for the 2022 MacBook Pro 13 is really the M2 itself. For starters, the new chip brings a higher level of performance to the laptop with its faster 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine.

Additionally, the M2’s memory ceiling is much higher as well at 24GB and also has 50 % more memory bandwidth. The media engine within the chip also brings together hardware acceleration for H.264 and HEVC together with ProRes encoding and decoding.

Apple claimed that the MacBook Pro 13 with M2 is 39% faster than its M1 counterpart for image processing and gaming. Not surprisingly, the Intel-based MacBook Pro 13 didn’t stand a chance as the new M2-based model is more than 3x faster than them in both workload types if Apple’s performance claims to be believed.
