Netflix Wants To Charge You Extra For Sharing Your Account

Netflix allows multiple profiles and even allows several people to be watching at the same time, depending on your plan, so it’s already pretty common for friends who don’t live together to share the same Netflix account to save on cost. Now, the streaming service wants you to pay more for that privilege.

Over the next few weeks, subscribers in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru will be receiving the “Add an Extra Member” feature. This will allow users to add up to two people outside their household to their account with their own login and password. It will cost an additional CLP2380 (~RM12.50) in Chile, US$2.99 (~RM12.50) in Costa Rica, and PEN7.90 (~RM8.88) in Peru on top of their existing monthly fees.

Additionally, members will also be able to transfer the profiles of those they’re sharing the account with to either a completely new account or the Extra Member sub-account. This will ensure that the viewing history, My List, and personalised recommendations of those profiles remain intact.

Whether or not Netflix launches this feature globally will most likely depend on how many new subscribers it can gain from this test phase. The company didn’t reveal how it would actually stop people from sharing passwords without paying for an extra member but last year, the platform experimented with an account verification tool, though it hasn’t received a wider rollout just yet.
