Sony has recently unveiled its latest mirrorless camera, the Alpha 7R V. This particular model is the first to feature the brand’s new AI-powered focusing system known as Real Time Recognition, which is touted to be a deep learning algorithm that can automatically identify subjects such as humans, animals, vehicles and so on.

In terms of design, the new mirrorless looks almost identical to its predecessor that was released back in 2019. That being said, it also comes with a lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy frame, as well as the same array of interface buttons. The camera also comes with compatibility with Sony’s E-mount lenses, a 9.44 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, and a new 4-axis 8.0 cm 2 million-dot TFT vari-angle touch screen. For connectivity, it features 2.4 Ghz and 5GHz Wi-Fi support, Bluetooth 5.0, two CFexpress Type A media slots, a HDMI port, 3.5 mm headphone and microphone jacks, a USB Micro, and a USB-C port.

Much like its predecessor, the Alpha 7R V packs the same 61 MP back-side illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, but is paired together with Sony’s brand new Bionz XR processor. Combined, the two are capable of offering more detail and colour fidelity, along with improved auto-exposure. Also onboard is a 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system (IBIS), an ISO range of 100 to 32,000 (expandable to 102,400), 15-stops of dynamic range, eight stops of compensation, a new anti-dust system, and a heat dissipation system.

Features-wise, the new camera is said to be capable of capturing RAW stills in 15, 26 and 61 MP resolutions, take 10 fps of continuous shooting with autofocus and auto exposure, record videos up to 8K at 24 frames per second (fps), and live stream footage up to 4K at 15 fps. Thanks to its new AI system, the Alpha 7R V is capable of identifying subjects, recognising poses, and providing improved tracking capabilities.

There’s also the Pixel Shift feature which lets it shoot up to 16 consecutive pictures with minute shifts in the sensor, resulting in an image with more than 200 MP of effective resolution. Any potential motion between frames when shot using this mode are smoothened out thanks to the onboard Imaging Edge system.

Meanwhile, powering the Alpha 7R V is a removable Sony NP-FZ100 battery pack which is claimed to help it last approximately 440 still shots and up to 90 minutes of actual video recording via viewfinder. The aforementioned onboard Type-C port also supports USB Power Delivery, enabling you to both charge and supply power to the camera via a USB charger.

As for availability, Sony Malaysia has confirmed that its latest mirrorless shooter is slated to arrive in early December this year. However, pricing for the Alpha 7R V will only be disclosed by the company by then.
