Opensignal Mar 2023 Report: Celcom Is Now The New King Of Download Speed

Opensignal has released the first Mobile Experience Report of the year for Malaysia, just as we are about to reach the tail end of March. Traditionally, this report would usually be out in April.

Despite being released slightly earlier than usual, the data collection period remained the same at 90 days. For March 2023 report, the data collection started on December 2022 and lasted until 28 February 2023.

After topping the chart since April 2021, Digi’s grasp on the Overall Download Speed Experience crown is now over as it has since been overtaken by Celcom. It was quite a comeback by the telco who ranked second last in the previous report that was published last September.

In fact, Opensignal pointed out that Celcom has achieved the largest download speed improvement at 15.2Mbps or 136% by going from 11.2Mbps to 26.3Mbps. At the same time, other telcos have also experienced some improvements ranging from 3.1Mbps to 10.1Mbps.

Celcom has also managed to overtake other telcos in the Overall Upload Speed Experience too which was previously led by U Mobile. That being said, the difference between the two telcos was just 0.3Mbps.

Meanwhile, another interesting observation that Opensignal has provided through its latest Mobile Experience Report for Malaysia is the disparity of 5G experience among local telcos. Even though they are using the same Digital Nasional Berhad’s 5G infrastructure, their average download speed was different.

For 5G Download Speed, this category was led by Digi with a significant margin that is as high as 192.1Mbps when compared to other telcos in the list. However, things looked pretty even in the 5G Upload Speed category as almost all telcos managed to land on the region between 40Mbps to 45Mbps with the exception of Yes.
