Street Fighter 6 To Launch In 2023 With A Load Of Features

Street Fighter 6 cast

Fans teased Capcom for its Street Fighter 6 teaser for a multitude of reasons, among them being the game’s logo. Now, with another major reveal in conjunction with the PlayStation State of Play stream, Capcom has revealed that it’s not changing the logo too much. Instead, it looks like the game is getting quite the system overhaul compared to Street Fighter V.

But before we get into any of that, we get a closer look at the characters that will be in Street Fighter 6. Luke and Ryu look pretty much the same as the initial teaser from February. We also get a look at Chun-Li, who looks the best she has ever been, in any game she has ever appeared in. And finally, there’s a very slight introduction for another new character called Jamie. and an even shorter tease of another, Kimberly.

Now onto the mechanics, it looks like Street Fighter 6 is replacing the classic EX meter with the Drive system. This gives it a lot more utility than just powering up special moves, allowing fighters to parry or power through an opponent’s move. You could think of the latter as a Focus Attack that uses meter.

Then there’s probably the least exciting one of them all, called the Modern Control Type. This basically helps you do special command moves with a single button press, as well as helping you string conbos together. If you’ve played the first Marvel vs Capcom on the PS1, and are familiar with the Easy Mode, then this is the Street Fighter 6 equivalent. Considering the fact that MvC1 for the PS1 was released all the way back in 1999, calling this the Modern Control Type is very weird indeed.

Capcom has also announced that Street Fighters 6 will get in-game real-time commentary. Commentators are even working with the company to provide their voices for this. But it remains to be seen if this will be something simple like what’s already in Marvel vs Capcom 3, or will it go super in-depth the way EA’s FIFA games do.

And finally, Street Fighter 6 will also come with a World Tour singleplayer story mode, and what’s called the Battle Hub for online play. The former sees you exploring the world of the game as your own custom fighter avatar. The latter, on the other hand, not only lets you find your next online match, but also “bring new and unique forms of engagements and communication”. Which probably includes stores for avatar customisation and emotes. These two ideas look to be lifted directly from Jump Force, as the resemblance is beyond uncanny.

Despite all these announced details, Street Fighter 6 does not yet have a release date. Instead, it has a release window of 2023.
