43-year-old hiker collapses, dies on way up Bukit Pancang in Tawau

KOTA KINABALU: A man died after collapsing during a hike at Bukit Pancang in the Tawau district on Saturday (Jan 15) afternoon.

The victim, identified as Shang Yun Fui, 43, is believed to have suffered mild health issues such as high blood pressure.

He was hiking with a group of friends when he collapsed midway up the hill.

State Fire and Rescue Department deputy operations chief Misran Bisara said they received a call about the incident at about 2.15pm.

He said fire and rescue personnel had to walk about 3km from the nearest spot their vehicles could reach before arriving at the place where the victim collapsed.

“Medical officials who followed pronounced Shang dead at the scene,” he said, adding that the body was brought out using a stretcher and later handed over to the police for further action.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Peter Umbuas said they are waiting for post-mortem results to determine the victim’s cause of death.

“So far, we are unsure as the family could not give much detail about Shang’s health condition,” he said when contacted Sunday (Jan 16).

He said the case is being classified under a Sudden Death Report for now.
