Almost 1,000 M’sians granted Fulbright scholarships since 1963, says Higher Education Minister

PETALING JAYA: Almost 1,000 Malaysians have been granted Fulbright scholarships since 1963, says Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad (pic).

The Higher Education Minister said up until last year, 970 Malaysians have benefited from Fulbright programmes, and that she hopes there will be a steady increase in the number of recipients.

“Some of the significant impacts of the Fulbright programmes that have benefited both our nations include increased growth in bilateral collaborations among higher education institutions, international mobility and knowledge exchange.

“To intensify this achievement, I believe that the continuous commitment of both countries is crucial in widening and deepening partnerships, enhancing and consolidating the process towards the development of the higher education system and eventually increasing our global visibility.

“Malaysia, as a country that is pursuing the aim of becoming an international hub for quality higher education, must organise the internationalisation process strategically,” she said during the virtual ceremony celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright programmes on Tuesday (Dec 7).

She emphasised that Malaysia is committed to strengthening the country’s bilateral relations with the United States (US) through the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) and Fulbright programmes.

The Fulbright is the US government’s flagship programme for education and cultural exchange.
