Bukit Assek rep proposes centralised pig farm in Sarawak’s central region to prevent ASF

SIBU: A centralized pig farm is being proposed for the central region that aims to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF).

“I have talked to pig farmers in the central region on how we can centralise the pig farming industry,” said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng at a Media Night and Chinese New Year gathering on Wednesday (Jan 18).

Chieng said he had also deliberated on the matter with the Land and Survey Department on Wednesday afternoon (Jan 18).

“I will have to convey their message to the (Agriculture) ministry on the centralization of pig farming so that we can avoid the African Swine Fever,” he added.

Most pig farms here have been closed after they were affected by ASF.

The region is now getting supplies of pork from Kuching.

Due to the lack of pork, consumers here have to pay a higher price.
