Cops nab labourer for extorting money from elderly man

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a labourer for allegedly extorting money from an elderly man.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the incident occurred at around 6pm on Sunday (Aug 21).

“The victim, a 64-year-old man was at his shop at Pandan Perdana food court along Jalan Perdana 9/10, Pandan Perdana when he was approached by the suspect.

“The suspect threatened to damage the shop if the victim did not pay him RM100 protection money,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 24).

He said the suspect also kicked some of the items at the shop and threatened to beat up the victim if he did not comply.

“Based on information received, police arrested a 41-year-old man who works as a labourer at Pandan Perdana at around 12.05am on Aug 23.

“Checks revealed the suspect had a prior record for crime and drug offences,” he said, adding that police also seized a mobile phone.

He said the suspect has been remanded for four days.

“The case has been classified as extortion,” he said.
