Depot riot: 80 Rohingya detainees still at large

ALOR SETAR: Operations to track down 80 Rohingya detainees at Sri Impian Immigration depot in Relau in Bandar Baharu, Kedah, is still ongoing.

Kedah police chief Comm Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said so far they have caught 448 of 528 detainees who escaped after a riot at the depot.

“Of the 448 that have been caught, 229 are men, 89 are women and 130 children – 69 boys and 61 girls.

“The remaining 80 include 65 men, eight women and seven girls,” he said in a statement on Saturday (April 23).

He said 15 people are still being held at the depot.

“Of the 15 being held at the depot, 13 are men and there is one woman and a boy,” he said.

On Thursday (April 21), a total of 448 detainees had been transferred to four separate Immigration depots: Langkap in Perak, Machap Umboo in Melaka, and Semenyih and Bukit Jalil in Selangor.

On Wednesday (April 20), a protest at around 5am at the Relau detention centre by Rohingya detainees quickly turned into a riot, where 528 detainees escaped the depot.

During the escape, six detainees, including two children, were killed on the southbound side of the North-South Expressway while trying to cross the highway near Jawi.
