Don’t contest top two Umno posts while party rebuilds, says Wanita chief

KUALA LUMPUR: The posts of Umno president and deputy president should not be contested, says the party’s Wanita wing chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad (pic).

She said the two leaders – Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan – should be given the time and space to lead the party.

“Let us give them … (the) opportunity to strengthen the party for the sake of Umno’s survival and for the country,” she said in her speech at the wing’s meeting here on Thursday (Jan 12) in conjunction with the Umno General Assembly 2022.

There have been calls for the top two posts in Umno not to be contested at the coming party elections.

The party must hold elections for all posts and at all levels before May 19, six months after the conclusion of the 15th General Election.

Umno had postponed its elections for 18 months after the 2018/2021 term ended on June 30, 2021, which meant that the party polls for the 2021/2023 term had to be held before Dec 30 last year.

However, in May, Umno amended its constitution to allow party elections to be held within six months after the conclusion of the general election.
