Dr Wee: Cabinet discussed election, flood preparations, but do not link the two

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet did discuss preparations for the upcoming general election, as well as to face possible floods on Wednesday (Sept 21), says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

At a press conference after unveiling a public audit programme on the condition of infrastructure operated by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd Thursday (Sept 22) morning here, Dr Wee reiterated that the date of the election rests solely with the Prime Minister.

“He will decide, but until that moment comes, preparations have to take place,” he said.

“At the same time, we must always be ready for floods, as per the prediction of relevant authorities, as we care for the well being of the people.

“As far as floods are concerned, we must always be ready, whether or not they coincide with any possible election,” he said.

“We don’t know when the election will take place, whether it is this year, or next.

“But failure to prepare for flooding will bring us grave harm,” he said, adding that the government will go by the provisions of the law, which is to have an election not more than 60 days after the dissolution of Parliament.

On the state of seat allocations among component parties, Dr Wee said there is no problem that cannot be resolved.

“We have experience with 14 general elections, including by-elections, so we would know what to do when the time comes,” said Dr Wee, who is also Transport Minister.

“We will take care of the political front by doing what needs to be done politically. At the same time, we will ensure the peoples’ welfare at all times.”
