Floods hit Johor, strong winds blow roofs off houses in Pontian and Muar

JOHOR BARU: Several locations in Johor were hit with floods and strong winds following hours of rain.

The Johor Civil Defence Force said two flood relief centres were opened in Batu Pahat to provide shelter to families from Kampung Seri Bengkal and Kampung Bintang Peserai after floodwaters entered their homes on Sunday (Sept 25).

“A total of 29 victims from 11 families from Kampung Seri Bengkal have temporarily been sent to Sekolah Agama Seri Bengkal for shelter while data for the SK Peserai flood relief centre is still being compiled,” it said in a statement.

In Johor Baru, areas such as Batu 10 in Skudai, Kampung Dato Sulaiman Menteri, Tabula Kemas in Skudai Kiri, Kampung Mohd Amin, Kampung Ubi, Kampung Tiram Duku, Kampung Peladang, Kampung Baru Muafakat, Kampung Pekajang and Kanpung Paya Mengkuang were also flooded following a downpour on Sunday morning.

In Pontian and Muar, strong winds blew the roofs off several houses.

“Those affected were houses in Kampung Sungai Naga, Ayer Baloi and Parit Haji Omar near Kampung Kayu Ara Pasong in Pontian as well as Kampung Parit Jamil and Sabak Awor in Muar.

“The floods were caused by heavy rain and high tides, which led to the waters rising quickly. But the floodwaters have started to recede in certain areas,” the statement read.
