Floods: Several villages in Johor inundated

BATU PAHAT: A heavy downpour and high tide caused flash floods to hit several villages in Sri Gading here early Wednesday (Sept 14) morning.

Penggaram Fire and Rescue station operations commander Firdaus Ahmad said the department received a distress call at 3.57am.

“Continuous heavy downpour together with high tide at Sungai Simpang Kanan here caused flash floods to hit Kampung Sri Gading, Kampung Sengkuang, Kampung Baru Sri Gading and Pekan Sri Gading.

“A total of 16 firemen in two fire engines and an Emergency Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle were immediately deployed to the scene,” he said.

He added that some 16 victims from the affected villages were rescued during the operation as flood waters rose to a depth of about 1m.

“However, no temporary relief centre has been opened with the victims moving into their relatives’ houses,” he said, adding that the situation at the scene was improving.
