GE15: Nik Omar not defending legacy of Nik Aziz, says cousin

KOTA BARU: Nik Omar Nik Aziz’s decision to run for a seat in the 15th General Election (GE15) under a PKR ticket in Perak has angered some family members.

Cousin Ahmad Dusuki Abdul Rani said that the eldest son of the late PAS leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat has tainted the family’s name

“It really affected the family when Nik Omar didn’t follow his father’s fight (which is for the religion). Instead, he claimed he was fulfilling his father’s wishes to see opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim becoming the prime minister,” said Ahmad Dusuki.

“What sort of a fight is that,” he added.

He said that Nik Omar’s actions are not alligned with the struggle of the family which centres around Islam and religiosity.

Ahmad Dusuki shared that Nik Omar never consulted the family before contesting as a PKR candidate, adding that the last time he met with the family was when Nik Aziz passed away.

Previously, Nik Omar had said his GE15 participation under the Pakatan Harapan banner was a way to fulfil his late father’s dream to see Anwar as the premier, adding that Nik Aziz had always voiced such a hope before his death in 2015.

Nik Omar’s younger brother Nik Abduh Nik Aziz is a PAS member and the outgoing Bachok MP as he has decided to sit out GE15 to make way for the younger generation.

However, Ahmad Dusuki commended Nik Abduh as he is truly fighting for his father’s legacy.

“We can see that Nik Abduh continues his father’s fight for Islam and the message of Islam, not like Nik Omar,” he said.

Nik Omar had previously contested under the PKR banner in GE14 for the Chempaka state seat, but lost to PAS candidate Ahmad Fathan Mahmood.
