Kedah trader gives away two tonnes of premium durians

KULIM: A durian trader here has given away two tonnes of premium durians of the Black Thorn and Musang King varieties – but asked those who benefited from the bounty to give a donation to a local school.

It is learnt that more than 200 people came to line up at the durian stall on Thursday (June 23) after learning about the free durian carnival.

The owner, who wished to be known as Lai, said there was a bumper crop of Black Thorn and Musang King durians this year and he had made a healthy profit due to the fruits’ high value.

However, those coming to eat the durians were asked to give a donation for a school nearby.

It is learnt that the durian carnival started at 2pm on Thursday (June 23) and lasted until all the fruits were given away.

According to staff members, many people came to their stall in Kedah from as far as Penang island and Bukit Mertajam on Thursday morning.

Upon learning that the carnival was only starting at 2pm, they decided to stay and wait.

Up to 400 people eventually turned up and had a feast at the durian carnival.

Not long ago, the same stall organised a durian buffet priced at RM9.90, attracting more than 100 people and successfully raising RM1,000 for a school.
