Khairy: Framework for registering Cannabidiol products to be released by next year

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry will release the framework for the registration of Cannabidiol (CBD) products next year, says Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin (pic).

“I will announce the framework soon for which we will be registering certain CBD products by next year,” Khairy said at the launch of The Centre’s Drug Perception Study Report.

“I am convinced about the evidence for CBD.

“I don’t think we will be allowing for self-medicating purposes at this moment,” he added.

Khairy said CBD should be prescribed and medical officers will have to be trained to prescribe the substance.

He said the ministry will have to take a step-by-step approach to legalise CBD in Malaysia.

“I think we are ready and I think the debate has been useful, but again looking at it in granular terms, it is very important as a regulator of pharmaceutical products in Malaysia,” he said.

“I think next year is a good target and I think we will release the framework sometime this year,” he added.

The ministry will also invite proposals for registration of CBD products, and the education needed for the medical industry when it comes to prescribing the product and its uses.

In April, Khairy said that the ministry is open to collaboration on clinical studies on the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
