Man in Ipoh fined RM6,000 for using unlicensed comms equipment

IPOH: A 47-year-old man was fined RM6,000 in default of two months’ jail for using unlicensed communication equipment at his home in Beruas, Manjung.

Faizan Ashfaq Ahmed, from Kampung Dendang, pleaded guilty when read the charge under Regulation 16(1)(b) of the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations, which was read together with Regulation 16(3) of the same regulations before Sessions Court judge Azizah Ahmad here on Tuesday (Feb 21).

Faizan, who was not represented, was found guilty of using the equipment, which included one unit of ku-band satellite broadcast antenna and one decoder unit, at his home on June 28, 2022 at about 12.40pm.

The case was briefly stood down when the accused said he required some time to decide on whether to change his plea after the penalty was read to him.

The offence is punishable under Regulation 37 of the regulations, whereby a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both.

When the case resumed, he maintained his plea.
