Melaka assault case now murder after 50-yr-old victim dies

MELAKA: Police here will reclassify the recent assault of a 50-year-old man here as murder after the victim passed away on Saturday (Nov 26).

“E. Murali Kuppusami, 50, who was in a coma for almost three weeks, succumbed to serious injuries at 5.57pm on Saturday,” Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zainol Samah (pic) said on Sunday (Nov 27).

DCP Zainol said a recommendation would be made to the deputy public prosecutor to reclassify the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

One of Murali’s six children, 19-year-old MK Daniel, was also seriously injured in the attack.

Six foreigners were charged recently in the Sessions Court here under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons.

No bail was granted to all six of the accused, who were factory workers.

The court fixed Dec 21 for next mention and for the appointment of an interpreter who can speak Burmese.

In the 10.40pm incident on Oct 31, both the victims were attacked by a group of men at an apartment in Ayer Keroh here.

The six, who were believed to be intoxicated at the time, allegedly attacked the victims who had asked them not to make too much noise.

The accused were living in a hostel above the victims’ unit at the apartment building.
