No ferry service for Penang motorcycles for seven months, terminals being upgraded

BUTTERWORTH: Ferry services for motorcycles will be stopped for seven months to upgrade berthing facilities at the Raja Tun Uda and Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminals.

Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng said upgrade work at the terminals would take place from Jan 1 to July 31, 2023.

However, he said only ferry services for two-wheeled vehicles would be affected.

“Ferry services commuting from Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal (PSAH) and Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) for pedestrian passengers will continue as usual,” he said during a press conference here on Thursday (Dec 15).

Ferry services for motorcycles will resume on Aug 1, 2023.

He said a total of 200 free sheltered parking slots for motorcycles would be provided at PSAH, Butterworth and SPCT ferry terminal in George Town.

He said the upgrades involve piling work at the seabed to ensure the floating pontoon is secure, which would take some time as it is risky.

He said when the work is completed and new ferries are introduced, Penangites would be able to enjoy modern, comfortable, fast and efficient ferry services.
