Part of new rural road in Kiulu collapses after landslip

KOTA KINABALU: A substantial portion of the relatively new Jalan Pukak Pahu Nulu in the Kiulu sub-district, some 35km from here, has collapsed following a landslip on Tuesday (May 17).

The road, which links Kampung Lokos and Kampung Pahu, is part of the Telipok-Kiulu-Rondogung route that was completed at the end of 2019.

Sabah Public Works Department (JKR) director Datuk Ali Ahmad Hamid said the incident occurred at about 3pm after continuous rain in the area.

He said the collapsed section of the road measured some 16m in length and 20m deep.

“As a safety measure, the road has since been closed to motorists,” he said when contacted on Wednesday (May 18).

He added that people can use the Jalan Tomis Tiong Lokub as an alternative route.

“In the meantime, our men have been working since this morning to build a temporary diversion road.

“We are not sure how long this will take, but the public is advised not to use this route for now. We will provide updates on the matter as soon as possible,” Ali Ahmad said.

Kiulu assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said they are communicating with Sabah JKR, which assured immediate action is being taken to resolve the matter.

Bangkuai, who is also the Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister, added that he will be visiting the site with Ali Ahmad at 2pm later today.
