Penang assembly reconvenes for first full in-person meeting this year

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state assembly reconvened here at the Penang Legislative Assembly building in Light Street for its first full in-person meeting this year, the first time since being closed for restoration work since 2019.

The first meeting of the Fifth Session of the 14th Penang Legislative Assembly proceeded smoothly on Friday (May 27).

The first day started at about 10am with state Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang entering the hall.

At the first sitting, Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak entered the hall with his wife Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Nor.

In his speech, Ahmad Fuzi touched on the need for Penang to focus on food safety programmes for the people to cope during these trying times, tourism recovery efforts in the state, and global warming including efforts to reduce our carbon impact, among other topics relevant to the state.

After Ahmad Fuzi’s speech, Law ended the session for the day saying they would reconvene on Monday (May 30) morning.

Earlier in the morning, a 102-man honour guard was mounted for Ahmad Fuzi, followed by the singing of the National and state anthems.

Previous sittings during the pandemic were broadcast live for the press to ensure the safety of all involved.

All assemblymen were present except Pantai Jerejak assemblyman Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The meeting was broadcast live on the assembly’s website at www.sidangdunpenang.com.
