Perak cops raid cryptocurrency mining operations for stealing electricity

TAIPING: The police have shut down more cryptocurrency mining operations for stealing electricity.

In the latest series of Op Letrik Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) raids in Taiping on Friday (Jan 7), police personnel went through 10 premises and seized about RM720,000 worth of equipment.

Taiping OCPD Osman Mamat said among the items seized included 480 cryptocurrency mining machines, three monitors, three computer processing units, 13 modems and routers and other peripheral devices.

“The police were assisted by TNB technicians during the operation. We will investigate the cases under Section 427 of the Penal Code and Section 37 of the Electric Supply Act,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Jan 8).

The Perak police have busted several cryptocurrency mining operations at over 40 locations in Manjung since the end of last year for stealing electricity.

Over RM5mil worth of equipment was seized while one man was also arrested.
