PM: GLCs, GLICs must appoint MTUC rep to board

KUALA LUMPUR: All government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs) must appoint a Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) representative to their board of directors, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic).

The Prime Minister said this was an effort to boost transparency and to ensure that the voices of the workers are represented in any decisions made by the board.

“It is the hope of the government that the worker’s representative will also play a role in administrative matters soon,” he said in his address at the Malaysian Trades Union Congress triennial delegates conference on Saturday (July 2).

Ismail Sabri added that he was the first prime minister in the country’s history to be invited to launch the conference.

He then said that MTUC-linked workers must always preserve stability, unity and industrial relations not just among themselves but also with the government and employers to ensure success in developing the country.

“The interests of the workers and the country must be streamlined. All irresponsible acts must be hindered as it affects their own interests, the community and damages efforts to have harmonious relations between industries,” said the Prime Minister.

He added that MTUC is a body which represents unionised members of the Malaysian Family and said that it was always seen as a good partner of the government.

“The role of MTUC is of the utmost importance in assisting efforts to economic recovery as the country is entering the endemic phase (of Covid-19),” he said.

Ismail Sabri also said that the government also agreed to provide an annual grant worth RM4mil to MTUC to implement training and awareness programmes that are significant in nature.
