Public will be disappointed if Najib released early, says Dr M

IPOH: The public will be disappointed if Datuk Seri Najib Razak is released from his sentence early, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Parti Pejuang Tanah Air chairman said he was certain the public would be upset if the former prime minister was releassed.

Mahathir, who is also the Malay-Muslim Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) movement chairman, said it was up to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to decide if Najib was entitled to a royal pardon.

“The Prime Minister must first explain why Najib is entitled to such pardon and then submit it to the King.

“Then the King can decide,” he said at the Sayang Bangsa tour at Pasir Puteh here on Saturday (Aug 27) night.

He added that there had been more than enough evidence presented in court.

“Over four years, we had three courts and nine different judges involved in the case who all made the same decisions.

“Evidence after evidence was presented to support their judgement yet Najib still says that it is all lies.

“What is the point of having courts and judges then?” he asked.

On Aug 23, Najib was sent to prison after the Federal Court upheld the High Court’s conviction and sentence.

On July 28, 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court sentence the former minister to 12 years in jail and RM210mil fine after finding him guilty of seven charges of criminal breach or trust, money laundry and abuse of position in the RM42mil SRC International case.
