Sarawak to host global meet on primate conservation
KUCHING: Sarawak will host a global congress on primate research and conservation in August.
The seven-day Joint Meeting of the International Primatological Society -Malaysian Primatological Society 2023 (IPS-MPS 2023) will take place at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching from Aug 19.
MPS president Muhammad Zaki Zainol said the 29th edition of the biennial congress, themed “Primates and People: A New Horizon”, would include keynote sessions, presentations, roundtable discussions and site visits around the state.
“We hope to showcase research and conservation initiatives on wild primates around Malaysia and the region and share findings with our international colleagues,” he said in a statement Friday (Feb 10).
Sarawak Forestry Corporation chief executive Zolkipli Mohamad Aton said he looked forward to networking opportunities between Sarawakian researchers and their global counterparts to exchange ideas and knowledge.
“We are excited to bring this congress to Sarawak as it will help create more awareness of our efforts in the conservation of primates,” he added.
IPS-MPS 2023 is expected to attract some 800 delegates in person and online, targeting students, researchers, scientists and professionals.
Early bird registration of US$250 (RM1,081) for Malaysians is now open until March 31, while the deadline for abstract submissions for oral and poster presentations is March 1.
