Stop, look, vote: Aspirasi candidate for Batu Kawah comes up with creative campaign

KUCHING: In an election, it is all about getting noticed and Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) candidate Fong Pau Teck is doing just that.

To get the attention of the electorate, the candidate for Batu Kawah has stationed himself at a traffic light at a busy intersection along Jalan Batu Kawah.

“I believe this is an effective way for me to campaign. By standing here, people will notice me,” he said when met at the lights.

He said since physical campaigning is not allowed, he stations himself at the same spot in the morning from 7am to 9am.

“In the evening, I will stand here starting at 4pm and will leave around 6pm,” said Fong, who stood there despite the drizzle.

He said some motorists would honk and wave at him when they passed by.

“When the light turns red, I will talk about Aspirasi’s plans,” he said.

Fong is locked in a four-cornered fight with Gabungan Parti Sarawak candidate Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, DAP’s Kelvin Yii and Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s Chai Kueh Khun.

Fong is not a stranger to elections.

He was elected as Pujut assemblyman under DAP in 2011.

However in November 2013, the party expelled him for indiscipline.

In 2016, Fong attempted to seek re-election for the Pujut seat as an Independent but lost, polling a mere 375 votes.
