Two killed in Tawau blaze

KOTA KINABALU: Two women – one in her 40s and the other in her 70s – died in a fire that swept through several houses in Tawau early on Sunday (June 12).

The burnt remains of Kamisah Mapiasah and senior citizen Sadiah Jabar were found on the ground level of their double-storey home about 1.5m apart from each other.

A Tawau Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they received an emergency call at 12.53am about the fire at Kampung Titingan, Jalan Tawau Lama.

It sent a team which arrived at 1am.

“Three houses were 100% destroyed, while a fourth affected house was 40% damaged and a fifth, about 60%. The bodies of the two victims, who were family members, have been handed over to the police for further action,” he said.

“The fire was brought under control at 1.32am and the operation ended at 3.08am,” the spokesman added.

The Tawau team was assisted by community firemen, police officers, Civil Defence Force and Rela members.
